Many people moving house have been either let down altogether by their moving company, or have found that their property has been damaged or lost through careless handling. It is therefore an absolute must to do some research before committing yourself to a particular company. Finding a good, reliable removal company is definitely not something you should do online. The safest way to get the best possible service is the old fashioned way, involving paper, pen and phonebook.
Friends, neighbours or family may be able to recommend a good moving company; alternatively, if an estate agent is involved in your move, they may have a company working directly with them or at least be able to recommend someone they have worked with on previous occasions.
In any case, it is advisable to find a company which has been in business for a minimum of 15 years and will do the moving themselves – subcontracting companies should be avoided. Once you have a selection of companies lined up, call them and arrange appointments for them to visit and give you a so called In House estimate. Enquire about the different services included in the price, as this will vary from one company to another. The estimate should be supplied free of charge, although it pays to enquire about this during your initial call, just in case.
Once you receive the estimates, ask the companies for references. Calling the FMCSA’s hotline (Safety and Consumer Complaints) on 1-888-368-7238 will enable you to find out about the history of complaints for any given company.
Always ensure you know exactly what you are signing for – blank documents should not be signed under any circumstances. Should anyone other than the agreed company arrive on the arranged moving day, do not hesitate to fire them.
You can hire moving companies in and around the chicago area to help assist you in your move.
